Look Up to the Night Sky in August 2023

Two Super Moons 🌑

Welcome to our new ‘Mini Blog’. I hope you find these tiny snippets informative and interesting.

On 1st August we have a ‘Super Moon’ called the ‘Sturgeon Moon’ this is the first of two super moons in August.

Full moons are named from The Old Farmer’s Almanac which is a trusted source today that delivers weather forecasts, moon phases, etc. These traditionally came from Native America, Colonial America, and European sources.

Named Sturgeon, as during this month in the Great Lakes sturgeon (fish) were readily caught.

At its peak, the Sturgeon Moon will be 222,023 miles (357,311 kilometers) from Earth’s centre, making it the second-largest supermoon of 2023.

Our second full moon and also a ‘Super Moon’ will be on 30th August and is named ‘Blue Moon’.  When there is more than one full moon in a month the moon is named ‘Blue Moon’. The last blue moon was on 21st August 2021.

Blue Moons are so rare, happening approximately every 2.5 years.

Therefore look up to and explore the night sky on 30th August too.
