Obsidian: Clarity and Protection

Obsidian is normally found in rhyolitic lava flows known as Obsidian flows and is a naturally occurring volcanic glass.  It is an igneous type of rock, which is formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava.

Obsidian possesses mineral-like qualities, yet it cannot be considered a genuine mineral since it lacks crystalline structure due to its glassy nature, and its composition varies too much to fit within the mineral classification. Therefore, it is occasionally categorized as a mineraloid.  Other mineraloids include Opal, Jet, and Pearls.

Obsidian typically has a dark hue, potentially changing colour based on the impurities that are found within it. The inclusion of elements such as iron and other transition elements can result in obsidian taking on colour shades ranging from deep brown to black.

Native Americans and other ancient cultures utilized obsidian for crafting weapons, tools, implements, and ornamental items, this was due to its distinctive conchoidal fracture, which enabled the production of exceptionally sharp stone.

Between 1200 and 1521, obsidian became the favored choice for creating mirrors in Central Mexico. While broken fragments of raw obsidian may have served as mirrors as early as the Preclassic era, it wasn’t until this period that obsidian was regularly shaped and polished for mirror production.

Obsidian is truly a remarkable gemstone, cherished for its ability to shield against negativity. But, this amazing stone not only blocks and absorbs negative energy but also has the power to transform it. It’s like having a guardian angel in the form of a stone!

It is also your go-to friend when it comes to clarity. It’s like a breath of fresh air for your emotions, body, and spirit, releasing any spiritual blockages within your aura and leaving a free flow of positive energy (chakras).  So, when you need to release stress and tension, obsidian steps in to help you lighten the load and clear the way for positivity.

Obsidian stands as a formidable protector, renowned for its unwavering ability to fend off negativity. This stone isn’t just about defense; it’s a true transformer of dark forces.

This stone can be worn by all zodiac signs but is associated mostly with Capricorn, Aquarius, and Scorpio as Obsidian is linked with both Saturn and Pluto

As Saturn (responsibility and determination) and Pluto (transformation)  are associated with Obsidian. When it comes to zodiac signs Capricorn and Aquarius as governed by Saturn and Spcorpio is governed by Pluto.  Therefore these three will find wearing Obsidian familiar and calming.

That being said, Obsidian is not a traditional or modern birthstone. By embracing it as your birthstone of choice, you’re making a statement that goes beyond tradition. You’re embracing a gem that resonates with those who value the unconventional and appreciate the beauty of the less-expected. In a world saturated with conformity, choosing obsidian is a bold and persuasive declaration of individuality.

To physically cleanse your stone, use nature. Gently allow the flow from a burbling brook or river to cleanse naturally. This is not only cleansing the stone but being at one with nature is so beautiful, relaxing, and cleanses your mind and soul too.  Cleanse fortnightly if using your stone frequently.

To charge your crystal place it in direct moonlight (Full Moon: Friday 29th September/ Harvest Moon). Do not place it in direct sunlight as your beautiful crystal will fade in colour.
